Warning

Scams: Beware of scams involving medical products. The risk of payment fraud and delivery of non-compliant and/or inferior products is high at this time.

Export Bans: Some countries, including India, enforce export bans on certain medical devices and supplies. Export bans enforced after you have placed an order can result in a total loss – or severe delay.

Before you order

Here are our recommendations for importers planning to order medical products.

Prices

It’s currently a seller’s market for many medical products, with more demand than supply. Expect higher unit prices for more products.

MOQ

The Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) requirements are also higher than normal. Some suppliers don’t accept orders valued less than USD 100,000.

Payment Terms

Some suppliers may insist on a 100% prepayment, before starting production. We still advise that you only pay a 30% deposit and 70% balance after quality inspection and lab testing.

Product Compliance

Medical devices and equipment are regulated in the United States and the European Union. Such regulations are there for a reason – to ensure that the product is not worthless (which is a risk) – and will not go away due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. You must request and verify test reports and other compliance documents (e.g. DoC) before placing an order.

Buyer’s Guide

Infrared Thermometers

Infrared thermometers provide temperature reading without actual touch with the patient. It uses a lens to focus infrared light from the human body part (e.g forehead and ear), then transmits to a thermopile for temperature reading.

The accuracy of an infrared thermometer depends on the measurement distance, as the measuring distance increases, the accuracy decreases, and vice versa. In addition, infrared thermometers can only be precise in a clean and dustless environment.

Digital Thermometers

Digital thermometers utilize an electrical resistance of metal that the sensor can detect the changes with temperature. Different from other thermometers such as mercury thermometers, digital thermometers do require a sensor, which can be a thermocouple, resistance temperature detectors, thermistors, and solid-state sensors.

Digital thermometers are inexpensive and provide a fairly accurate temperature. It is considered as reliable measuring equipment for medical use. Also, digital thermometers provide a fast temperature reading and easy reading. However, digital thermometers can be easily damaged by dropping to the group or running out of battery.

Wearable Smart Thermometer Strips

Thermometer strips can indicate the temperature changes in different colors by simply attaching the strip to the patient’s forehead. Users can monitor the temperature overnight or even a longer period.

Thermometer strips are less accurate compared with other thermometers such as infrared thermometers or digital thermometers; the temperature measurement is only for reference to check if the temperature changes rapidly.

Thermometer strips can be useful for children’s temperature measurement, especially as users do not need to wake the patient in the middle of the night, and take action if needed.

Pacifier Thermometers

In order to keep track of the babies’ temperature, pacifier thermometers provide a soothing effect during the temperature measurement. Pacifier thermometers shall stay in the baby’s mouth for a long period to get an accurate reading, and this could be difficult if the baby does not cooperate.

However, pacifier thermometers are not recommended for newborn babies, as they might cause suffocation if not used correctly. Also, the temperature reading is less accurate compared to digital thermometers or infrared thermometers; users shall only consider pacifier thermometers as a reference for temperature monitoring.

Mercury Thermometers

Mercury thermometers have a long history as a temperature measurement equipment, dating back to 1714. The mercury-filled tube expands and contracts with the temperature changes, and the user can read the temperature from the scale. It can be used for oral, rectal, armpit temperature measurements.

However, mercury can be harmful to the users as it’s poisonous. If the user breaks the tube, the mercury will evaporate and contaminate the surrounding air and cause health issues to humans. Also, mercury thermometers are more expensive and respond slow compared to digital thermometers. Therefore, mercury thermometers are not as popular as digital thermometers nowadays.

Regulations

European Union

Medical thermometers are covered under the Medical Devices Directive in the EU. The harmonized standards EN 12470 parts 1-5 cover the requirements and specification of most medical thermometers such as pacifier thermometers and digital thermometers.

Importers shall refer to the applicable standards and regulations before the production stage in order to be product compliant. Notice that the EU banned mercury thermometers due to its toxicity.

United States

Medical thermometers are covered under the FDA in the US. The CFR Title 21 Part 880 provides general provision and requirements of different types of thermometers, including electronic thermometer, color change thermometers, and mercury thermometers.

Medical thermometers are required to submit the 510(k) premarketing notification and receive FDA approval before being placed in the market. Notice that certain states in the US have restricted the sale of mercury thermometers for medical use, as such, importers shall confirm whether it is legal to sell mercury thermometers in the US.
